The Altona Pier has stood at the edge of the bay in one form or another for more than a century.

The original timber structure, built in the early 1900s, stretched out into the shallow waters of Port Phillip, serving steamers, fishermen and day-trippers chasing sea air. It was eventually replaced with the modern pier that stands today.

On any given summer day, the pier fills with fishermen staking out their spots. Teenagers jumping in where they shouldn’t. Music drifting across the water from portable speakers turned just a little too loud.

And yet, every now and then, there’s a moment like this. Still water. Clear horizon. The bay behaving itself. The version locals like to remember.

For decades, Altona Beach has been the western suburbs’ answer to a perfect summer day.

Framed by rows of Norfolk Island Pines, the shoreline stretches wide along Port Phillip Bay, a view locals know immediately.

Its famously shallow waters make it one of Melbourne’s most family-friendly beaches. At low tide, the bay settles into warm, knee-deep pools that seem made for kids, where paddling turns into hours and time slows to a crawl.

For generations, families have made the trip west for the calm water, soft sand and the kind of easy, sunburnt afternoons that stretch long into evening.

Then comes fish and chips by the water. Seagulls circle, watching for opportunities. Afterward, a melting ice cream from the shop next door, eaten quickly before it drips away.
