Thomas Swallow 1888 (Swallow and Ariell biscuits) Edmonton was established originally as a sugar-milling town (ideally located to serve the surrounding sugar plantations and with direct access to the port facilities at Cairns) it was first called Hambledon Junction because of its proximity to the Hambledon plantation and mill. Hambledon had been established in October 1881, when Thomas H. Swallow took up land which would eventually constitute a plantation of 6000 acres. The initial layout included 900 acres for sugarcane, 100 acres for bananas, 20 for pineapples and 20 for citrus trees. A sugar mill was erected at the cost of £33 000. Swallow and Ariell, founded by Thomas Swallow in 1854.
