Between 1995 and 2005, artist Jan Mitchell transformed 104 weathered timber mooring posts into the Geelong Bollards.
Salvaged from the old Yarra Street Pier, each post was hand-painted as a tribute to the characters who shaped the city by the bay: lifesavers, sailors, musicians, swimmers, children and everyday locals.
Today these cheerful figures line the Eastern Beach waterfront and have become one of Geelong’s most recognisable landmarks. Just beyond them rise the Spanish Steps, while the Ferris wheel, historic carousel, Cunningham Pier and rows of towering palm trees frame the foreshore.
Stand here for a moment and the scene almost comes alive. Carousel music drifting across the water. Seagulls circling overhead. And that line of painted characters watching the waves roll across Corio Bay.
The Geelong Art Bollards at Eastern Beach. One of Victoria’s most beloved waterfront scenes.
This artwork is available in A0, A1, A2, A3, A4 and Postcards.
