The story behind this print began with a journey from St Kilda along the foreshore towards Yarraville. Travelling towards the bridge late one afternoon, the sun was huge and blinding, filling the sky with a golden haze. The air seemed to sparkle, the traffic slowed, and for a moment the rush of the day gave way to a collective pause. There was something about the light, the bridge and the western horizon that felt unmistakably like Melbourne’s west. That moment became the inspiration for this print.
Since opening to traffic in 1978, the 2.5-kilometre West Gate Bridge has become one of Melbourne’s defining landmarks, carrying the city across the Yarra River and connecting the west with the inner city.
