Newport Lakes Reserve Suburban Icon Poster
It is hard to believe that this tranquil bushland oasis, where stepping stones cross peaceful waters and native birds sing, was once a site of dynamite and dust. Before it was the sanctuary we know today, this land was a bustling bluestone quarry operating from the late 1860s for exactly a century.
The rock pulled from these deep pits didn’t just build the roads and sea walls of Williamstown; it traveled the world as ballast in ships returning to Europe, paving streets as far away as the UK. When the pickaxes finally stopped in 1968, the site faced a grim era as a refuse tip. However, the local community rallied to save it, transforming the industrial scar into a 33-hectare ‘recycled’ park.
Today, the sheer cliffs have been terraced and revegetated, and the quarry holes are now pristine lakes. Whether you are hopping across the rocks or enjoying a family picnic, you are standing in a testament to nature’s ability to heal. Bring a piece of this hidden gem home with our Newport Lakes Suburban Icon Poster.
This artwork is available in A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, as well as the ever popular Postcard. Professional framing is available on A0, A1 and A2 sizes via pick up only.
