Spotswood’s "The Nest" Suburban Icon Poster – Two Birds Summer Days Version
This building, constructed in 1939, originally housed W. G. Goetz & Sons, renowned tool and die makers. Founded by William Goetz in the late 19th century, the business began as an iron-safe maker on Queen Street around 1880. After partnering briefly with engineer Gustav Müller, Goetz established his independent business in West Melbourne. Following William’s passing in 1913, his sons Albert and Otto took over, and the company relocated to the modern Spotswood building.
During World War II, W. G. Goetz & Sons secured a government contract for manufacturing bullets and machinery. After the war, the company diversified its production, crafting power presses, press tools, automotive parts, and even beer cans, foreshadowing the building’s most famous occupants, Two Birds Brewery.
W. G. Goetz & Sons was acquired in the 1990s and ceased operations in 2000. In 2014, Danielle Allen and Jayne Lewis transformed the historic building into their vibrant brewery and pub, The Nest, located near Spotswood train station.
