St Kilda Astor Theatre 1936 Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

The Astor Theatre opened its doors on Friday, 13 April 1936, today looking much the same and standing as an icon of the era. Up until 1967, it operated as an independent suburban cinema, screening second-run films, before becoming a Greek-language theatre. Sadly, the Astor closed in 1982.

But that wasn't the end of the Astor. The theatre was restored, with its original colour scheme, lighting, and vintage fittings brought back to life. In true Aussie tradition, the theatre now showcases classic double features alongside modern hits.

But it's the vertical sign, one of the oldest neon signs in continuous operation, that truly shines. Built and installed in 1936 — the same year as The Skipping Girl sign — the famous Astor neon sign used to also be adorned by a horizontal sign directly above it, spelling the theatre's name and crowned by a grand star. However, after being hit with multiple lightning strikes in the 1950s, the upper section was removed.

Vintage Suburban Icons tips its hat—with a bag of popcorn and a Choc-Top in hand—to the glorious Astor Theatre of yesteryear, its neon sign casting a radiant invitation every night, signalling that cinematic magic is about to begin.

This artwork is available in A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, as well as the ever popular Postcard. Professional framing is available on A0, A1 and A2 sizes via pick up only.
