Right in the heart of Yarraville Village, the Railway Hotel has been part of local life since 1874, when it was known as Kelly’s Railway Hotel.
Originally a modest single-storey hotel, it was expanded within its first decade to accommodate more guests, with additional parlour rooms and a billiard room. Over the years, the Railway became much more than somewhere to enjoy a drink. It was the place where Yarraville happened.
Cricket and football clubs held meetings, locals gathered, travellers found temporary accommodation, and community notices and advertisements for lost items found their way to its doors. For generations, the Railway was woven into the everyday life of the village.
The original hotel was eventually replaced by the striking 1937-38 building that stands today. Our artwork takes inspiration from a wonderful 1959 photograph of Anderson Street, bringing the scene to life with a classic FE Holden, a bicycle and a local gentleman heading off for a well-earned knock-off beer.
From its early days as a local hotel to its place at the heart of modern Yarraville Village, the Railway has seen generations of locals come and go.
